The xSV™ Framework

xSV™ (Expected Sync Value) is our proprietary valuation framework. It determines what music would have cost if it had been licensed properly — grounded in real-world benchmarks, not hypothetical estimates.

Why xSV™ Exists

For decades, sync licensing has operated without a consistent, independent method for determining the value of music used without authorization. When disputes arise — and they increasingly do, especially around social media usage — the question shifts from whether music was used to what that use would have cost.

Courts, law firms, and rights holders need a defensible answer to that question. Not a guess. Not a range pulled from thin air. A structured, evidence-based valuation grounded in how the sync licensing market actually works.

That is what xSV™ provides. Developed from over 40 years of combined sync licensing experience and informed by 100+ cases assessed, it translates complex market dynamics into clear, defensible numbers.

Two Core Scores

Every xSV™ valuation produces two independent scores that together determine a track's sync licensing value. Both are expressed on a 0.00–1.00 scale.

Artist Sync Score
Scale
Measures the artist's public recognition, cultural footprint, and negotiating leverage in the sync market. Based on the commercially strongest collaborator on the track. Higher scores indicate artists with significant cultural presence and licensing power.
Song Sync Score
0.00–1.00
Scale
Measures the specific recording's market footprint: streaming performance, playlist penetration, chart presence, and genre-specific commercial relevance. A track can score higher or lower than its artist — reflecting the reality that not every song carries equal sync value.

The combination of both scores places a track within a Valuation Tier — from Lower to Premium — which anchors the pricing logic across territories and license durations.

What xSV™ Factors In

Each valuation draws on multiple data layers. No single factor determines the outcome — the model considers how they interact.

Historical Sync Benchmarks
Real-world licensing fees from comparable deals across media types, territories, and artist tiers. Informed by 20+ years of direct sync licensing practice.
Artist Market Data
Streaming performance, playlist presence, social following, cultural footprint, and catalog depth. Weighted by genre-specific relevance.
Song-Level Metrics
Track-specific streaming data, chart history, Shazam signals, editorial playlist inclusion, and cross-platform performance.
Territory & Duration
Pricing varies significantly by territory (US, EU, GAS, Asia, Global) and license duration (3, 6, or 12 months). Each combination produces a distinct valuation.
Media Type & Context
Social media, broadcast, film, gaming, and advertising each carry different pricing norms. Paid media use carries a premium over organic placement.
Cultural Weight
Some tracks transcend their metrics — iconic status, cultural moments, emotional resonance. The model recognizes context that pure data cannot capture.

How a Valuation Works

Scope Confirmation

We define the exact parameters: which track, which usage, which territories, which media type, which duration. Every valuation is scoped before it begins.

Data Collection & Scoring

We gather artist and song data across streaming platforms, chart databases, and sync market references. The xSV™ algorithm processes this into Artist Sync Score and Song Sync Score.

Valuation Matrix Generation

Scores feed into the Valuation Matrix — a territory-by-duration pricing grid showing floor, mid, and ceiling values per side (master and publishing separately).

Expert Review & Context Layer

Every output is reviewed by our team. We apply professional judgment shaped by decades of sync practice — accounting for market nuance, cultural context, and factors that algorithms alone cannot assess.

Report Delivery

The final deliverable — whether a one-page Valuation Matrix or a comprehensive Sync Valuation Report — is structured to withstand legal scrutiny and support settlement negotiations.

Built for Scrutiny

xSV™ was designed from the ground up for adversarial environments. Every number in a Sync Valuation Report can be traced back to its source data, methodology, and reasoning. This matters because opposing counsel will challenge it.

Our 73% settlement rate reflects that: when the methodology is transparent and the data is defensible, cases resolve. The framework doesn't produce convenient numbers — it produces accurate ones. Sometimes that means a valuation comes in lower than a client hopes. That independence is precisely what makes it credible.
